Rachel’s Place Hotel in Bongao is perhaps the most practical accommodation facility in Tawi Tawi. They offer free wifi and they have a working security system, a nice open air restaurant , a beautiful garden and practically clean rooms.  Also worthy to mention, the hotel is walking distance from the town proper but is away from the noise of the streets.

Here are some photos of Rachel’s Place Hotel which I took during my stay here.

HOW TO GET TO RACHEL’S PLACE HOTEL

If you intend to walk (I did not do!), Rachele’s Place is located in Ilmoh Street, Lamion, Bongao.  Alternately, ride a tricycle and tell the driver you are going to Rachel’s Place.

MY PERSONAL BIAS

Rachel’s Place is one if not the only modest and safest hotel to stay in Bongao. Rate ranges from 700.00 to 1,500.00 per room per night.  They have a beautiful garden restaurant but their prices are not practical of the place. I gave it a try though.

My fascination about Tawi Tawi started when I first saw pictures of travel bloggers on top Bud Bongao.  I have always been amazed by those wonderful pictures posted in their Facebook walls. It was a dream to reach this place. And today, that dream is a reality.

Bud Bongao is more popular as a mystique place rather than its imposing beauty. To the Muslims, this place is sacred because it is the abode of the Spirits. Locals climb this mountain for healing, prayer and/or to get connected with the spirits that own the mountain, thus making it a holy place.

My story to follow.

In the mean time, here are the pictures of the beautiful Bud Bongao.

HOW TO GET TO BUD BONGAO

From Bongao, take a tricycle to bring you to the “base camp.” The better alternative is to get a guide (your tricycle driver can do) to accompany you to the summit. Don’t forget to haggle for a good rate. Trekking time is is normally an hour.

PINOY ON THE ROAD STYLE OF TRAVELING

I brought bananas with me to give it to the monkeys! I saw lots of monkeys on my way up and saw none on my way done!

MY PERSONAL BIAS

I love Bud Bongao. It is a must see and a must experience. Tawi Tawi is never complete without climbing its highest peak. Two thumps up. Or better yet, tWo hands up!

Red River Valley Waterfalls or popularly known as Pulang Bato Falls is a unique waterfalls because of its seemingly red water caused by the red rocks in the area. The rocks contain some sort of minerals that make the water appear  reddish though in fact it is clear.  It is only the reflection of the rocks that make the water red.

Pulang Bato Falls has a nice cascading water that pours to a man-made pool where most locals would swim or dive.

Here are some photos of Pulang bato Falls.

This is the Provincial Capitol of Tawi Tawi located in Bongao.  Bongao is the most populous of the 11 towns of the province. The capital town of Tawi Tawi is Panglima Sugala.

The capitol building looks more of a mosque rather than a government office building. It has a huge golden mosque dome called minaret at the middle and two golden cupolas on its side.  It is located on top of a hill over-looking the town of Bongao and other islets.

The capitol ground is a famous hang-out place among the locals most especially those who jog early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The Old Chinese Pier is perhaps the busiest place in Bongao. This is a major gateway to the other islands of the province as well as going to Zamboanga or Malaysia. Big and small wooden boats used as passenger and cargo vessels are docked here.

Locals say that this place is called Chinese Pier because long time ago, Chinese merchants and other merchants like the Arabs and Malays used this port as their main gateway to trade their goods.  Also during the early years, Chinese merchants built their boats in this area.

I am not a market-goer person and I was amazed of the colorful fishes I saw in Bongao Fish Market.  Apart from the colorful fishes that are sold fresh (yes, without ice), all vendors do not use weighing scale and interestingly, everything is sold by piles and are really cheap and one can even bargain for a lower price.

And yes, they also can grill it for you!

Another interesting fact about Bongao Fish Market is that all vendors are male. I did not take a photo though because I felt it was wrong doing such.

My visit to the Balobok Cave, Cove and Rock Shelter is my baptism of fire in Tawi Tawi. On my first day, I told Alvin (my tricycle driver cum tour guide) to bring me to somewhere where I could feel a little tension – say, a Muslim flooded far-flung area, rough roads, or anywhere provided it’s not the usual tourist stuff.  Foremost to my request is to see a waterfalls.  He smiled and thought I was joking. I told him I am not provided I wont die there.

Wish granted. He took me to a place called Barangay Lakit-Lakit which is an hour away from Bongao Proper.  The way going there is a real adventure. Rough, far-flung, barely uninhabited and uncultivated, garbage dumping area of the province, Muslim cemetery along the route and yes, it was raining that time.  I got what I wished for.  I secretly smiled that I wish I am not in this place!

Tawi Tawi | Balobok Cave, Cove and Rock Shelter | What to See in Tawi Tawi | Photo Essay

Then we reached a road where he has to park his tricycle and we walked from there. The trek is about 3 kilometers in the “nothingness”  or should I say “fullness” of far-flung Tawi Tawi.

Tawi Tawi | Balobok Cave, Cove and Rock Shelter | What to See in Tawi Tawi | Photo Essay

My first sight of the circular rock arch which serves as the entrance going down the cove is impressive. A boardwalk has been previously built here but has been destroyed in the passing of time.  So we needed to struggle ourselves finding the safest way down.

There is really nothing extremely special or beautiful in this place except for the adrenaline thrill it gave me.  The cove has crystal clear blue water but the off white sand has many small rocks/stones and was dirty at that time because of the heavy rains.  The Balobok Cave, of archeological significance, has been the site where archeologist found some artifacts dating back more than 5,000 years ago.  The Balobok Cave, Cove and Rock shelter has been previously developed as a potential tourist destination but eventually not carried through. I maybe wrong but I know the obvious reason.

My last stop over for the day is the Badjao Village. I asked Alvin to bring me to the famous water village where Badjaos live in peace and harmony with one another. The Badjaos here have relatively large population and they don’t live a life like the Badjaos we know in the streets of Manila, or in my case, in the streets of Batangas.  Here, they have a descent home and source of livelihood.  The waters of Tawi Tawi have been their source of livelihood, of harmony and of community.

Tawi Tawi is a Muslim-dominated province being one of the provinces comprising the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) or what is now known as Bangsamoro Region.  There are very few Catholics here or other Christian denominations.  I was told that only about 5% of the poeple in Tawi Tawi are Christians.  Never the less, the Catholic Church has a parish Bongao called Our Lady of the Rosary.  I was lucky that during my visit here, there was a mass going on and there were only about 12 of us in attendance.

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Bongao is located just across the Police Headquarters in town down proper.

I have to admit I forgot the name of this beautiful White Mosque located by the bay.  I was trying to contact my tricycle driver in Bongao but to no avail I can’t reach him already. Anyway, it was about 2pm when he brought me here and it was low tide.  The majestic white mosque lies elegantly in a carpet of green grass while on its other side is the ocean.

Interestingly, the locals use the airport as an alternate road when there are no arriving or departing aircraft.

Satti is a famous breakfast in Tawi Tawi.  Satti is grilled chicken placed on-top of cube rice and dipped in a special satti sauce.  I have only seen this delicacy in Southern Mindanao particularly in Zamboanga City.
